Sclerotherapy
Categories: Veins/Capillaries
Small superficial purple/red veins of thighs, shins and calves, can be treated by a process called sclerotherapy. Injections of a special solution diminish or eliminates the spider veins.
How does Sclerotherapy work?
Small injections of specialized solution into the tiny veins cause them to temporarily bruise and subsequently collapse and clear.
What does a Sclerotherapy treatment feel like?
Sclerotherapy can be uncomfortable for some people. The discomfort feels like cramping as the solution enters the veins, but the discomfort lasts for only 1-2 minutes and is completely resolved by the end of the treatment.
How long does a Sclerotherapy treatment take?
The treatment takes 10-15 minutes.
When will I see results?
Clearer legs are visible in three to four weeks after each session. Bruises are expected for up to 1-2 weeks in the areas of treatment, so we recommend having the treatment at least one month before or after shorts/bathing suit season so marks have time to fade.
How many Sclerotherapy treatments will I need?
The treatment may need to be repeated for desired results.
What do I need to know before my first Sclerotherapy treatment?
We recommend wearing compression stockings for 48 hours after treatment and/or refraining from activities that pump blood to the lower legs, such as hiking, biking or treadmill.
